Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR)
This is one of the few steam railways still operate regular passenger services in the region.This runs through the Nilgiri Mountain region between Mettupalayam and Ooty(Udhagamandalam), a distance of 42km. It climbs from 1069ft above sea level(AMSL) to 7228ft AMSL at Ooty within this 42km streatch.
In 2005 UNESCO declared the NMR a World Heritage Site as it is one of the oldest mountain railway systems, operating since 1899.

The Nilgiris or the Blue Mountains, often called The Queen of Hills are a range of mountains in South India boardering the districts of Kranataka,Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Between Ooty to Coonoor, the train is operated by YDM4 diesel locos.
From Coonoor to Mettupalayam the trains are operated by steam rack locomotives manufactured by Winterthur of Switzerland.
